News and updates for a good start into the next year

After a long period of testing the spectrum transports for xmpp, gadu-gadu, qq etc. we also replaced the old python based aim, icq and msn transports with spectrum instances. When we first started using spectrum it was showing very good performance but it crashed regularly. After months of hard work of the spectrum team, the transports seemed stable now for the past few months. No crash, no high cpu or memory usage and no disconnects from the services of which we know. Because of the many benefits of spectrum we decided to move all our XMPP transports from py-* transports to spectrum. We hope to see further development of this great project and as they add more features and networks to their software we will most likely be adding those new features to this server.
This is a list of the currently available transports/gateways on our server at limun.org and jabb3r.net:
- AIM
- Gadu-Gadu
- ICQ
- Identi.ca
- MSNa
- MySpace
- Simple
- XMPP/Jabber
- IRC
The move to spectrum definitely was not as transparent to our users as it could have been but it still all went well. The existing AIM, ICQ and MSN transport data was migrated to spectrum so that none of our users should need to re-register to the services and gateways. Unfortunately this change could not be done without the interaction of our users so we ask everyone to remove all their migrated MSN contacts which contain a "%" in their name and leave the contacts with "\40". This action should be safe, at least as we have tested and seen.
In the past few weeks we also applied an update of the ejabberd jabber server software running on this machine. Lots of issues were fixed in this release, but also a few enchancements have been done. We changed our configuration so that you can now use captcha to protect your chatrooms from spambots. Since we personally find the captcha annoying during registration with the server, this feature is currently disabled until we see problems with growing account numbers on the server caused by spambots. Most changes during this update will most likely not affect a great number of our users.
Oh and when we're already talking about great numbers: We now have 630 registered users on our server with an average of about 40 users always online and about 60 max concurrent users a day. We are happy and proud to provide this jabber service to so many users and we will be happy to see those numbers growing.
